Five tobogganing tips for the Thuringian Forest

Sledding fun for young and old

The longest toboggan run in the Thuringian Forest - natural toboggan run Oberhof

With two kilometers, the natural toboggan run Oberhof stands for pure tobogganing fun. It is the longest toboggan run in the Thuringian Forest and also offers a shuttle service. Starting point is the Rondell Oberhof, popular starting point also for cross-country skiing tours and winter hikes. There you can also rent a sled directly at the top station. On the downhill run, 2 sharp curves and a gradient of 12% await you. A shuttle bus will take you back to the starting point in a relaxed manner, where you can fortify yourself with bratwurst and mulled wine or get right back on the downhill run.
The tobogganing fun starts - depending on the snow conditions - in December, during the vacations and on weekends daily 10-16.00 hrs, ticket prices from 4.00 € for a single ride, from 13.00 € for a 5-ticket. Family tickets (2+3) range from 12,00 € for a single trip or 48,00 € for a family 5-ticket. The bus shuttle is included in the prices. In addition, three snowshoe tours start at the mountain station, tour 1 "To the Bärenstein", tour 2 "Rennsteiggarten-Round", tour 3 "Wildfütterung-Forsthaus Sattelbach". You can also rent the appropriate snowshoes here.

Year-round downhill fun at the Siegmundsburg and Oberhof tubing facilities

On a rubber tire, without the possibility to steer, it goes down the 250 meter long slopes in Oberhof and Siegmundsburg all year round. Often with the back first and with many turns, you glide down the prepared track at up to 40 km/h. By the way, you don't need sporting skills. Only courage is required. In Siegmundsburg, you can also "tubed" on Saturdays by floodlight into the evening.

Situated at the highest - the toboggan slope at the Schneekopf tower

At 978 meters above sea level, the Schneekopf is the second highest peak in the Thuringian Forest. Its observation tower the Schneekopfturm reaches 1,001 meters at the viewing platform and is thus the highest vantage point. The toboggan slope starts below the tower and leads down a wide meadow with a 12% slope and past the new Gehlberg hut. The toboggan slope is short at 200 meters, but suitable for families and fairly snow-sure from December to March. The excursion to the Schneekopf plateau is also worthwhile because of the good refreshments in the new Gehlberg hut and the good view. On clear days, you can see not only the entire Thuringian Forest, but also the Brocken mountain on the horizon.
From the parking lot, follow the "Winterwanderweg Walderlebnispfad zum Schneekopf" (winter hiking trail to the Schneekopf) for about one kilometer through the forest before you reach the Schneekopf plateau. Several cross-country skiing trails also lead along there.

Sledding with floodlight

It is a very special atmosphere when the winter forest is illuminated by the floodlights of the toboggan slopes and lifts as night falls. A toboggan ride is especially fun then and puts the crown on every day. Tip: with warm tea or mulled wine, the sinking temperatures in the evening hours can be easily endured. You can find toboggan slopes with floodlights in:
